Vintage Conn 4D Bell: Orion Constellation Applique
Vintage Conn 4D Bell: Orion Constellation Applique
This bell is a nice vintage yellow brass Conn 4D from the 1960s. It has been delacquered, cleaned, fitted with an Alexander ring, and two Orion constellations were soldered onto the outer bell surface, 180 degrees apart. Each constellation is 19 stars of varying sizes. Each star is nickel silver (0.016" thick).
The bell with Alexander ring weighed 391g before the brass star applique. It weights 394g after the constellations were applied. Like all Conn 4Ds I have worked with, it produces a nice soft resonant sound.
bell height: 5-3/16 inches
bell throat inner diameter: 2-27/32 inches
bell rim diameter: 12-1/4 inches
Note: This bell is a prototype and there are a few deeper scratches and some solder staining around the stars, which can be seen in the pictures. I could not detect difference whatsoever on the bell flare sound before and after the constellation applique.
