The Getzen horn that donated this bell was built to last. Labeled "Elkhorn by Getzen", its 80727 serial number dates it to 1956. The bell has been delacquered, cleaned, and fitted with an Alexander ring. Seven planets, one representing each movement of Gustav Holst's The Planets, have been created and soldered onto the outer bell surface: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter (including 4 Galilean moons), Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. The planets are made out Nickel Silver, Red Brass, Copper, and Yellow Brass.
This is a heavy duty bell, weighing in at 513g with its Alexander ring before the planets applique. It weighs 564g after the planets were applied. It is a very playable bell, very clean and clear sound, and you can use it with little fear of damage in any environment.
